Olympics-holdout nations to hold games July 16-17
| Eugene, Ore
An international track and field meet featuring the US Olympic team and athletes from several other countries boycotting the Moscow games will be held in Philadelphia July 16-17, Monitor sports writer Larry Eldridge reports. The announcement of the Liberty Bell Classic was made jointly by the Athletics Congress and the University of Pennsylvania, which will host the event.
In addition to the American team, which is being determined at the US Olympic track and field trials here this week, other countries expected to compete include West Germany, Canada, Kenya, Norway, New Zealand, Israel, Bermuda, Barbados, and Swaziland.
A similar meet previously scheduled at the same site for July 22-23 was canceled after objections by International Olympic Committee officials that it conflicted with the Olympics, which will begin in Moscow July 19.
