15-YEAR-OLD AT Wimbledon beats Britain's '77 champ

Andrea Jaeger, at 15 the youngest seed ever in the 94-year history of the Wimbledon tennis tournament, showed maturity well beyond her years Monday to upset Britain's 1977 reach the quarterfinals of the championships.

All of the other top women advanced, though there were a couple of scares. Billie Jean King had to scramble back from the brink of defeat to win a 5-7, 7-6 , 10-8 marathon against fellow American Pan Shriver, and Australian Evonne Goolagong Cawley, the 1971 champion, was taken the full distance by 18-year-old Gana Mandalikova of Czechoslovakia, 6-7, 6- 3, 6-1.

Things were easier for defending champion Martina Navratilova, second- seeded Trace Austin, and third- seeded Chris Evert Lloyd, all of whom won their fourth-round matches in straight sets.
