World population growth slowed in the 1970s, the Census Bureau said. The rate of growth declined from an average of 1.9 percent during the first half of the decade to 1.7 percent from 1975 to 1979. Less developed regions as a whole grew three times as rapidly as the more developed regions -- 2.1 percent a year against 0.7 percent.
