This Sunset Book emphasizes heat-circulating fireplaces and efficient fireplace design and placement. There are suggestions for improving the warming function of an existing fireplace with the addition of heat-saving devices. One chapter gives instruction on building masonry fireplaces and another on installing prefabricated ones, either built-in or free-standing. A chapter on wood stoves discusses them as free-standing units or ones inserted into fireplace openings.
