Voters will make some key decisions this week toward shaping the next Congress, as 14 states hold primaries Tuesday. Much attention will be focused on the race for New York Republican Jacob Javits's Senate seat -- both on the GOP and Democratic sides. The last polls before the election showed Javits with a close lead over his opponent for the GOP nomination, Alfonse D'Amato. Javits has never lost an election.

In other major races, Sens. Gary Hart (D) of Colorado, Barry Goldwater (R) of Arizona, and Jake Garn (R) of Utah are all unopposed in primaries, but voters will sift out a field of their other-party challengers for the November election.Elsewhere, Sen. Paul Laxalt (R) of Nevada and Sen. Russell Long (D) of Louisiana each face primary hurdles this week before reaching the general election.
