Mugabe, Nkomo factions in outbreak of violence
| Salisbury, Zimbabwe
Supporters of Prime Minister Robert Mugabe and Home Affairs Minister Joshua Nkomo fought each other with grenades, automatic weapons, and stones over the weekend in the worst such violence since Zimbabwe won its independence, police said. Tension between the Mugabe and Nkomo organizations goes back to the early 1960s, when several prominent nationalists, including Mr. Mugabe, broke away from Nkomo, who was considered too moderate. After his victory at the polls Mugabe named Nkomo home affairs minister in a reconcliation bid.
