Iraqi helicopters attacked enemy armored forces in Susangerd on the fourth day of bitter fighting for control of the Iranian town, the Iraqi News Agency reported. It said hundreds of Iranians were killed over the weekend in the battle for Susangerd.
Tehran Radio also reported heavy fighting there and said Iranian regular infantry had broken through to aid the mixed defending force of paratroopers, Revolutionary Guards, and members of the local police.
However, Iraq said its force were wiping out Iranian resistance pockets. It also said 10 Iranian gunboats were sunk on the Karkheh River and Iraqi helicopter gunships had raided Iranian positions around Abadan.
