Chinese paper to start US edition

China's 6.3 million-circulation official newspaper, People's Daily, plans to start an edition in the United States next year, the Monitor's Peking bureau reports. The paper, in Chinese, will be printed in San Francisco for distribution to American subscribers and others in the Western Hemisphere. Editors at the parent paper say they intend the US edition to serve readers in the Chinese-American community -- and students and scholars studying the Chinese language or current news. People's daily is also spawning a separate English-language daily paper to be published next year in Peking. Its purpose is to supply general world news to the foreign community living in China, and to tourists.
