Seoul orders an overhaul of its central intelligence

The government has ordered the revamping of the feared South Korean Central intelligence Agency in a public face lift of the controversial spy organization. The changes come 14 months after the assassination of President Park Chung Hee by former KCIA Director Kim Jae Kyu. The spy organization has come under fire for other domestic and foreign incidents, including the "Koreagate" scandal involving bribes to foreign legislators.

The organization will be called the Agency for National Security Planning, effective Jan 1. The government said it will be banned from meddling in state affairs that have no direct bearing on national security. There will be no personnel or organization changes.
