Unemployment surges to 9.3% in Britain

Britain's total of unemployed has risen sharply, to 9.3 percent of the work force, according to government figures published Tuesday. The number reported out of work this month was 2,244,229, compared with 2,162,874 last month, which represented 8.9 percent of the work force. The figures are the highest since the depression of the 1930s.
