Harold C. Urey, an A-pioneer

Dr. Harold C. Urey, who passed on here, was a Nobel Prize-winning chemist who played a key role in development of the atomic bomb during World War II. Dr. Urey discovered heavy hydrogen in 1931 and later received the Nobel Prize for the discovery that paved the way for development of the hydrogen bomb and use of atomic power for peaceful uses. A lifelong scientific researcher and teacher, Urey was one of the three program chiefs of the wartime Manhattan Project which developed the atomic bomb, making the United States the first na tion to possess it.
