Nkomo hints compromise in Zimbabwe Cabinet rift
| Salisbury
Zimbabwe minority leader Joshua Nkomo appeared to be seeking a compromise with the Prime Minister of Robert Mugabe over his demotion in a Cabinet shuffle. Mr. Nkomo declined to elaborate his position, but hinted he sought a compromise by which his party (PF-ZAPU) would stay in the coalition government, provided it was given a much greater role than has so far occurred.
Mr. Mugabe's majority party (PF- ZANU) and PF-ZAPU have been divided on tribal, ideological, and personality lines for years. While they were loose allies during the seven- year war against white-minority rule, their guerr illa armies never achieved unity.
