Oil companies to repay customers $158 million

Nine oil companies have agreed to pay some $158 million in refunds to customers for allegedly violating federal price controls, the Energy Department said. The agreements, reached in the final days of the Carter administration, were expected to set a precedent for future settlements. The refunds will be made indirectly to customers who were overcharged b y giving them lower electric rates.
