US receives 'assurances' on Nicaragua arms

The US has received "certain assurances" from Nicaragua that it will stop shipment of arms through its territory to left-wing groups in El Salvador, Secretary of State Alexander Haig said Monday, Mr. Haig said the US is watching closely to see if the assurances are followed by action before making a decision on further aid to the Managua government.

In response to Mr. Haig's statements, Sandinista leaders predicted the failure of any economic measures the US might impose against Nicaragua for its alleged aid to leftist guerrillas in neighboring El Salvador.

Meanwhile, 27 people were killed in fighting between leftist guerrillas and government troops during the last 24 hours in El Salvador, a spokesman sai d Monday.
