Spanish emergency called over killing of 2 colonels
| Madrid
Prime Minister Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo called an emergency meeting of leading ministers Sunday as tension rose in Spain after the killing of two Army colonels less than a month after an attempted military coup. The Defense Ministry said the killings confirmed fears that the Basque separatist organization ETA had launched an offensive against the military to try to frighten Spain, provoke the armed forces, and destabilize democracy.
Mr. Calvo Sotelo was meeting the ministers of the interior, defense, justice, and territorial administration to review possible steps against escalating violence in the northern region.
