Skipping Rope
One bearing up each end, and you between, alert to make your leap in time to words that recess have no sense but sound the ritual full out in rhyme: The purpose is to keep from being trapped by whirring rope. Your ears become your feet, your body thrust aloft in altitudes of air to a relentless beat. A journey to nowhere, the same place held on bare school yard, but upward bound by song, by chant, by rhythm on and on to rapture, both feet off the grou nd.
