Economists condemn British money policy

A group of 364 university economists condemned British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's monetarist policies as wrong and a threat to national stability. Only 24 hours after the Conservative leader pledged to maintain course despite her difficulties, the economists issued a public statement and sent copies to her and chancellor of the Exchequer Sir Geoffrey Howe.

The Confederation of British Industry, an employers' organization which has also attacked government policies, predicted that contrary to government forecasts Britain's worst recession since the 1930s could continue into next ye ar.
