Warsaw Pact exercises: Are they on or off?

Warsaw Pact military exercises in and around Poland have technically ended, but the level of military activity remains high, a NATO source reported Tuesday. The assessment, probably based on interceptions of Warsaw Pact communications, differed with a report by the official East German news agency ADN saying that the exercises were continuing.

The exercises were due to end last Wednesday but were extended as a n ew government-union crisis erupted in Poland last week.
