US plans $285 million for African refugees

Jeane Kirkpatrick, the US ambassador to the United Nations, told a conference here that the United States would give $285 million for African refugee relief this year and next, subject to congressional approval.
Speaking of America's African heritage through the roots of 26 million of its people, Mrs. Kirkpatrick said President Reagan is deeply moved by the African refugees' plight.
The UN hopes for pledges of $1.2 billion for immediate assistance and long-term repatria tion of refugees or their integration in the host country.
