The Physician

There's nothing quite like the feeling when a positive sense of health replaces an anguished sense of disease. In trying to find words to describe the experience, we may say something has been returned to us; that a balanced consciousness about ourselves had gone away, but now it's back. That's it, isn't it? Disease is a sense of lacking something, of incompleteness.

We feel most normal when we feel complete. But we're not statues; we're living beings, so completeness for us is best captured in the concept of harmony.m

Is there any way to have consistent harmony?

Throughout the Bible there flows a powerful current of prayer-based healing activity, showing itself most clearly in the work of Christ Jesus. Though resulting in physical harmony, Biblical healing was spiritually accomplished. And spiritual methods, coinciding with the teachings of Jesus, are so exact and unfailing as to qualify for presentation as Science --Christian Science.

This Science inculcates that God is omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent; that He is infinite, All; and that man is His perfect spiritual idea. Man -- true man --is never in need of healing, for he is inseparable from God, all-harmonious Principle.

This truth of being is monumental, and none of us grasps it fully all at once. Yet as we do admit these facts, cultivating them like precious seed, they begin to flower in our lives, bringing regeneration, protection, healing, and spiritual growth. Even though we may at present see ourselves as mortals existing apart from God, each step of yielding to the truth of our actual spiritual wholeness helps us destroy discord and restore out God-given sense of harmony.

Several years ago I was afflicted with a case of painful hemorrhoids. Though a student of Christian Science at the time, I was nonetheless pretty inexperienced. But I believed that God directs those who love Him and that the Christ, His divine manifestation always present in human consciousness, could heal. Hadn't Jesus promised that "faith as a grain of mustard seed" n1 would remove all obstructions? Returning home inspired from a Christian Science Wednesday testimony meeting, I opened Science and Health with Key to the Scripturesm by Mary Baker Eddy n2 at random. (I'd heard of people doing that and hitting upon a precisely healing passage, but nothing so dramatic had ever happened to me!) This is what I read: "The blood, heart, lungs, brain, etc., have nothing to do with Life, God. Every function of the real man is governed by the devine Mind." n3 That was it! I really saw that my Life was God; it was not blood, matter. God is all-harmonious, and so must I be as His likeness. All pain instantly vanished, and the swelling receded and disappeared by the next day.

Scores of subsequent healings, accomplished either through my own prayer or with help from a practitioner listed in The Christian Science Journal,m have proved this healing was not miraculous. My experience was linked to the holy current of Biblical healing. When the deep Science of the Bible is perceived and put into practice, we can prove without a possibility of doubt that God, Truth, is always our Physician.
