US gives valor awards to its former hostages

Secretary of State Alexander M. Haig Jr. presented valor awards to Americans who were held captive in Iran, saying they "won the admiration of all those who value freedom and the rule of law." Mr. Haig presented the Award for Valor, the State Department's second-highest award, to 54 of the 72 Americans who were seized by Islamic militants at the US Embassy in Tehran Nov. 4, 1979, or who took refuge with Canadian di plomats. All those honored were Foreign Service employees.
