11 stalled choices cleared for State Department jobs

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved by an overwhelming vote 11 administration nominees for senior posts, including three State Department appointments stalled by conservative Sen. Jesse Helms (R) of North Carolina. All 11 nominees were approved by 14-to-0 votes. Senator Helms did not attend the voting.
Among the State Department nominees approved were Chester A. Crocker as assistant secretary for Africa, Myer Rashish as undersecretary for economic affairs, and Robert D. Hormats as assistant secretary for economic and business affairs.
