Baseball negotiators face to face as date for walkout nears

Negotiators for major league players and owners are holding three days of meetings here this week, but there's been no indication of any major change in position by either side as the May 29 deadline for a threatened baseball strike approaches.

The players have indicated they will walk out on that date unless the owners rescind a plan by which teams losing a ranking free agent would receive a major league player from the roster of the team signing the free agent.

Owners have said they were within their rights to carry out the plan and have rejected player proposals for other types of fre e-agent compensation.
