Portuguese Cabinet rift brings two resignations

Prime Minister Francisco Pinto Balsemao will meet President Antonio Ramalho Eanes to discuss replacements for two Cabinet ministers who have resigned. The two -- Eusebio Marques de Carvalho, minister of administrative reform, and Augusto Ferreira do Amaral, minister for the quality of life -- have been involved in sharp conflicts with their Cabinet colleagues. Their resignations were not unexpected.

Political sources say the resignations are a sign of growing internal tension within the ruling coalition of Social Democrats, Chr istian Democrats, and Monarchists.
