Thatcher policies rapped by protesters in London

Thousands gathered in central London for a demonstration against unemployment and the economic policies of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's Conservative government. The demonstration was the climax of a month-long, 280-mile march by 500 unemployed people from the north of England organized by the Trades Union Congress. Police said between 40,000 and 50,000 people attended the demonstration.

Government figures show the number of jobless, already higher than at any time since the depression, rose last month to 2,558,405, or 10.6 percent of Britain's work force.
