Jointly owned CD vulnerable

Am I responsible for my daughter's debts if I put her name on my certificate of deposit? Would this be called "joint," or could I use the word "or" to escape this responsibility? -- H. T.

When you put your daugther's name on your CD, she becomes a co-owner. It is my understanding that the use of "and" or "or" makes no difference. Both you and she would own 100 percent of the CD. If your daughter has attained her majority, you are not responsible for her debts unless you agree in writing to co-sign notes or other debt instrum ents. You are responsible for her as long as she is a minor
