EC says it joblessness rose 35% over May 1980

The number of jobless in the European Economic Community stood at 8.3 million in May, 35 percent higher than a year ago, the EC statistics office said. The number of jobless represented 7.3 percent of the work force in the EC's 10 member countries, against 5.4 percent in May 1980 in the nine-member community before Greece joined. In most countries, the proportion of under 25-year-olds in the number of unemployed increased in the last year.
