Bishop Dominic Yimming Tang, named by Pope John Paul II as the Vatican's archbishop in Canton, has been removed from his position as bishop by the Chinese church. Bishop Tang was released from a Chinese prison last year and went to Hong Kong for medical care. After the Pope's appeal to Chinese Roman Catholics to return to the Vatican fold, he went to Rome to meet John Paul, The Pope named him archbishop of the southern Chinese city, but the Chinese church, which does not recognize the Vatican's authority, bitterly opposed the move
