GOLF; Some random thoughts

Hats off to Jerry Pate, who showed refreshing originality in celebrating his first victory on the pro golf tour in three years. Instead of merely raising his arms as so many victorious athletes do these days, Pate dove into a lake at the conclusion of the Danny Thomas Memphis Classic -- golf shoes and all.

* Sinking long putts and hitting long drives are thrills for any golfer. But for the casual player I doubt there's a better feeling than that one gets repairing a b all mark made by a crisp shot onto the green.
