Marcel Breuer, architect, teacher

Hungarian architect Marcel Breuer who passed on Wednesday, conceived the prototypes of almost all steel tubular furniture, and taught such noted architects as I. M. Pei, Edward Larrabee Barnes, Ulrich Franzen, Paul Rudolph, and Philip Johnson. His interest in tubular steel furniture began when he became intrigued by bicycle handlebars while teaching at the famed Bauhaus school in Germany in 1925.

Among the highlights of his architectural career were the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the University of Massachusetts Campus Center in Amherst and St. John's Abbey Church in Collegeville, Minn.
