Clerical pay continues upward
Salaries for US and Canadian office employees are continuing an upward trend in 1981, with clerical employees averaging 9 percent gains in the United States and 13 percent in Canada, according to a salary survey conducted by the Administrative Management Society, Willow Grove, Pa.
The survey reports information for 20 positions -- 13 clerical and 4 data processing, with three word processing jobs added for the first time. The society compiled salary and fringe benefit information on 498,760 employees with 5,970 companies in 122 North American cities.
As of January, the US weekly average for 16 clerical jobs (including the three word processing positions) was $219, with salaries ranging from $168 for file clerks to $293 for executive secretaries and administrative assistants.
In Canada, the 16 clerical positions averaged C$259. Again, file clerks were on the low end with an average of C$214, while executive secretaries and administrative assistanst were on top at C$331.
