The White House has long-range plans for the conservative Democrats who sided with Reagan on that recent budget vote. The 29 legislators have been targeted as prime candidates for conversion to the Republican Party.
following the 1982 election, Reagan adviser Lyn Nofziger says he's hoping to recruit the maverick Democrats into the GOP. Nofziger has promised the group of 29 that the White House won't campaign against them next year because "those people voting with the President" are not vulnerable.
However, Nofziger points out that if Democrats stop voting with Reagan they suddenly become "vulnerable."m
