Waldheim is expected to seek new UN term
| United Nations, N.Y.
Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim is expected to announce that he will seek election to an unprecedented third five-year term in the United Nations' highest office.
Mr. Waldheim's only serious rival in the election, which will come at the end of the General Assembly's three-month 36th session opening Sept. 15, is Tanzanian Foreign Minister Salim A. Salim.
Waldheim has sidestepped all questions on whether he might stand for another term, but informed sources indicated he plans to announce his intentions at a news conference today (Sept. 10) because further delays would give impetus to the campaign for Mr. Salim.
