The day management got the word

American business got the word from its man in the Cabinet the other day. And surely there is something to what Commerce Secretary Baldrige said about business doint its part now that "government, finally, is doing what you've been asking it to do."

And what should business do?

Turn away from the attitudes that Mr. Baldrige said were responsible for the nation's poor showing on exports in the past decade.

"I don't think it's labor productivity that's a problem," he told an audience of US Chamber of Commerce executives. "It's managment. And I speak as a former manager. In my opinion, management has been too fat, dumb, and happy in the past 10 years. Management hasn't been sharp enough or hungry enough or lean enough."

Wow!

Is that why Mr. Baldrige is a former manager?

Or is he maybe just the man for yourm company?
