Honduran vote indicates end to military regime

Roberto Suazo Cordova proclaimed himself the next president of Honduras Nov. 30 as his moderate Liberal Party headed toward a sweeping general election victory. With almost half the estimated 1.2 million votes counted, official preliminary results showed the centrist Liberals with 54 percent of the vote and the right-wing National Party with 11 percent.

Mr. Cordova seems certain to take over from Gen. Policarpo Paz Garcia in January, formally ending almost a decade of military rule in this Central American republic, one of the poorest in Latin America.
