Tributes to Mr. Canham

Among many tributes to former Monitor editor Erwin D. Canham, who passed on over the weekend, is the following cable sent to his wife, Patience Canham, from the governor of the Northern Marianas, Carlos S. Camacho:

''. . . We shall ever remember Erwin Canham with gratitude and high regard for the way he shaped and prepared the people of these islands for the responsibility of commonwealth government and then demonstrated his faith in us by making his home with us, and, in his own quiet way, practicing exemplary citizenship every day of his life: on the streets, in our homes, in our churches , on the radio, in the newspapers and our committees. . . . These intense memories will endure . . . for they are a true monument of a great man.''

Why is Christian Science in our name?

Our name is about honesty. The Monitor is owned by The Christian Science Church, and we’ve always been transparent about that.

The Church publishes the Monitor because it sees good journalism as vital to progress in the world. Since 1908, we’ve aimed “to injure no man, but to bless all mankind,” as our founder, Mary Baker Eddy, put it.

Here, you’ll find award-winning journalism not driven by commercial influences – a news organization that takes seriously its mission to uplift the world by seeking solutions and finding reasons for credible hope.
