Tower: US feels Turkey is on track for democracy
| Ankara, Turkey
The United States is satisfied with Turkey's progress toward reinstating civilian-controlled democracy, Sen. John Tower (R) if Texas said after meeting with Turkey's military head of state, Gen. Kenan Evren.
The Senate Armed Services Committee chairman told a news conference he believed Congress would approve President Reagan's request for increased military and economic aid for Turkey, a NATO ally, in the 1983 fiscal year.
The increase, from $118 million to $818 million, would make Turkey the third-largest recipient of US aid after Israel and Egypt.
