New Orleans still top-tonnage port

The Corps of Engineers says the Port of New Orleans retained its No. 1 standing in the nation in 1980 based on total tonnage handled.
In the latest year of record, the port showed a healthy gain of 10.2 million tons to 177,315,800 tons of commerce, according to statistics compiled by the Waterborne Commerce Statistics Center.
Other ports listed in the report were New York, with 166,991,220 tons; Houston, 108,937,268; Valdez, Alaska, 85,973,086; and Baton Rouge, La., 79,346, 780.
