It is who you know!

Few organizations seem to be totally free from politics. Too often one's advancement and success in business are believed to be dependent on ''who you know'' rather than ''what you know.''

Is there a way to defeat this injustice? There certainly is. We can turn wholeheartedly to God and depend on His sponsorship alone. Actually, we need only capitalize the ''w'' in ''who'' and we will find a provable spiritual law.

David's knowledge of God eventually lifted him to his exalted position as a great and powerful king. How clearly he must have recognized the true power behind his throne! As a beloved Psalm depicts God as saying, ''I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.'' n1 David saw this proved in his life.

Psalms 91:14.

The Master, Christ Jesus, knew God as no one has ever known Him. He called God his Father and our Father; and his teachings turn us to God, not persons, as the source of all we truly are or can be.

To begin to know God we need to recognize to some extent His allness. God is the only genuine cause, the originator of all that is real and good. He is omnipresent good itself. He is infinite Spirit, Life, Truth, Love. His will, eternal good, is actually the only will -- unopposable, irresistible, omniactive.

To know more of God we need humility. ''Humble yourselves . . . under the mighty hand of God,'' the Bible tells us, ''that he may exalt you in due time: casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.'' n2

A young Christian Scientist had learned the importance of depending on God in business. As a result, she became the first woman in management in the controller's office of a major multinational corporation. A few years after her promotion, a crisis arose. All office employees belonging to the company union were called out on strike. She was left with a major project and a deadline to meet - and only two employees to do a job that normally required at least eleven people! Another blow fell. One of the two remaining workers was taken from her by another manager (a man with political clout).

It seemed she was helpless. But she had proved many times that these words of Mary Baker Eddy, n3 referring to the one omnipresent God, who knows only good, are true: ''Now this self-same God is our helper. He pities us. He has mercy upon us, and guides every event of our careers. He is near to them who adore Him.'' n4

As she realized in prayer the continuity of these truths, things began to happen. For the first time in the ten years she had known him, the head of the company came into her office to visit. He asked how she was getting along. She said they were doing the best they could. Two days later he was back. She was busily at work with her one remaining employee. He asked if there was anything he could do. The young woman felt strongly that she didn't want to bother him with her problem. She was depending solely on God.

The next day her immediate supervisor rushed into her office demanding to know what she had told the ''big boss.'' ''Nothing,'' she replied. ''Why''? ''Because,'' he answered, ''he has just sent down an order to all of us that we are to release to you as many workers as you request for as long as you need them.''

Needless to say, the project was finished on time. The strike ended shortly afterward. And if there were those who wondered about the order that came down from the top that day, the young manager wasn't one of them. She knew ''Who'' had sent it.
