Nicaraqua floods may change US aid policy

The United States government may grant its first direct aid to Nicaragua in more than a year because of floods that killed more than 100 people and caused $ 200 million in damage, a US official said. Aid from the US embassy in Managua was given to the Nicaraguan Red Cross and not to the leftist government because the Reagan administration suspended aid to Nicaragua in January 1981, charging the Sandinistas with supplying arms to leftist guerrillas in El Salvador.
