US advises Americans in Lebanon to leave

The State Department recommended Monday that Americans living in Lebanon leave the country. The department's recommendation followed rocket shelling of the US Embassy in Beirut and the invasion of southern Lebanon by Israeli troops.

The evacuation recommendation did not apply to the few State and Defense Department personnel in the country, the officials added. The United States is halving its diplomatic representation in Beirut, to 25, and evacuating all dependents.
