US casts lone veto in UN on measure against Israel

The United States vetoed a Security Council resolution condemning Israel's failure to withdraw its troops from Lebanon and demanding an end to hostilities there within six hours.

The resolution said that in the event of noncompliance, the Council would meet again ''to consider practical ways and means in accordance with the Charter ,'' a hint of punitive measures. Only the United States came out against the resolution when it was voted on Tuesday night.

In London, Secretarty of State Alexander M. Haig Jr. said that the United States' main concern is to stop the bloodshed in Lebanon but that it will continue to send military supplies to Israel.
