Steady June auto sales surprise market analysts

United States automakers sold virtually as many cars in the first 10 days of June as they did in the same period last year - a surprise to analysts who thought the end of a General Motors incentive plan would mean a drop in sales .

Sales generally fall off much more for automakers when incentive programs end. The absence of a big decrease may indicate car buyers are returning to the showrooms.
