10 Chicago policemen guilty in drug bribes

In the sixth major scandal for the Chicago police department since 1960, 10 officers, many of them veterans, were found guilty of taking bribes to protect West Side drug rings, reports Monitor correspondent Lucia Mouat.

Chicago police superintendent Richard Brzeczek called the so-called ''Marquette 10'' verdict ''a warning to any officer who may be inclined to violate his oath of office.''

Three weeks ago 13 more officers were indicted in a somewhat similar drug selling scheme. In that case some of the officers allegedly sold cocaine and heroin directly from their cruisers while in uniform.
