* Heavy rains and cool weather have caused Utah's Great Salt Lake to rise three feet in the past year and it has state officials worried. Great Salt Lake is a terminal lake: it has no outlet and loses water only by evaporation. If the lake rises another two feet, it will damage minerals industries, highways, lakeshore parks, and wildlife preserves, so Utah officials are working on a proposal to finance damage-prevention projects to present to the legislature. But the situation is complicated by disagreement among lake experts over whether or not the inland sea will continue to rise.
