Senate OKs bill to set limit on immigration

The Senate approved a bill Tuesday that would revise US immigration policy for the first time in 30 years by limiting immigrants to 425,000 a year, about the average of recent years.

The Senate passed the bill 81 to 18 and sent it to the House. Most immigrants let in would be relatives of US citizens or residents. The bill would also give US residency to illegal aliens already well established in the United States, but impose fines and even jail terms on employers who hired illegal aliens in the future.
