NBC says Soviets knew of plan to slay Pope
| Washington
NBC News reported Tuesday the Soviet Union may have been behind the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II last year.
An NBC documentary on international terrorism to be broadcast next Tuesday builds a chain of circumstantial evidence and allegations by Vatican and Western intelligence sources, which conclude that at minimum the Soviets knew about the plot and did nothing to stop it, believing that ''without the Pope's unique support, the running rebellion in Poland could soon be contained.''
