China intends to recover Hong Kong, official says

China said Thursday it would recover the whole of Hong Kong when conditions are ripe and that the 19th-century treaties under which Britain took over the colony were unacceptable.

The remarks were by a Foreign Ministry spokesman responding to comments on Hong Kong's future by British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
