US places export bans on 4 German companies

The Reagan administration imposed an export ban on four West German companies in retaliation for their supplying equipment for construction of the Soviet natural gas pipeline.

The move, announced by the Commerce Department, prohibits the companies from receiving any US oil and gas equipment, services, or technology. It came after a Soviet ship loaded with turbines made by AEG Kanis left the West German port of Bremerhaven.
