Humidity-control devices can help prevent mildew

Q. We find dampness develops mold or mildew in our condominium. Of course, we run the air conditioner when necessary. What will lessen the humidity in the house?

Alfred M. Scherz Sarasota, Fla.

A. The inside temperature is governed by the thermostat controlling the air conditioner.

Create a lower interior relative humidity, and you help lessen the mildew.

Ask a local air-conditioning contractor about having a relative-humidity control installed to operate your air conditioner in conjunction with the thermostat.

Some homeowners in high-humidity climates use unit dehumidifiers to reduce moisture content of inside air.
